Welcome to CYGNETS
CYGNETS is a vibrant not-for-profit group which was set up in 2010 as a new and exciting venture to develop skills in the performing arts, create performance opportunities and promote youth talent.
Today, CYGNETS is as keen as ever to develop people, young and old, and has many exciting projects in the pipeline.
These include high calibre concerts, ‘Sing In A Day’ events, Musical Youth Theatre Showcases and performances and short musical theatre courses during school holidays. Courses successfully run so far include MATILDA THE MUSICAL, OLIVER!, ANNIE, GREASE & THE LION KING, CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY and more recently A MOVIE EXTRAVAGANZA.
In April 2017, amidst stiff competition, CYGNETS were chosen to be one of 250 youth groups and schools throughout the UK to take part in the National Theatre’s ‘Connections’ Festival 2017. This involved staging a play, #YOLO by Matthew Bulgo, at The Fallibroome Academy and then performing it again at The Lowry Quays Theatre on 2nd April 2017 to amazing reviews and nominated for 5 NODA awards!
CYGNETS wants to continue in their mission to provide opportunities for new and emerging talent to showcase their material. We welcome and encourage new writers and composers, and would like to give our audiences the opportunity to see new and original work.
The main aims of CYGNETS (Cheshire Youth Group for New and Emerging Talent on Stage) are:
To teach and develop skills in all aspects of the performing arts (Acting, Singing and Dancing)
To provide a variety of opportunities to perform
To encourage and promote youth talent
To use theatre arts, music and drama as an aid to personal and social development
In May 2010 the group presented its first show: “THE MAGIC OF MUSIC” – an exciting singing and dancing variety show, full of vibrancy and energy, giving its cast of 42 talented youth the chance to demonstrate their talents and showcase what they could do.
It was a show with a difference as it provided many new opportunities. Apart from varied material from well-known musicals and artists, some new and unique material was performed with several of the cast providing new musical arrangements (Karol Jaworski), their own choreography (Kate Hawker), and an extract from a new musical “18 Years”, written by 16 year old Ollie Mills, was showcased with a 15-piece youth orchestra.
The Magic of Music Production Team consisted of a group of voluntary professionals: Kalini Kent, Heather Hayes-Wilson and Sue Lane, who have many years’ experience performing in and directing musical theatre and dance shows. The show was run entirely on a not-for profit basis so no one earned anything from it.
In July 2014, CYGNETS performed a concert at Macclesfield Masonic Hall to a capacity audience and managed to raise over £850 in one evening for the charity CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young).
Amidst a talented line-up of performers, three songs were performed from a newly commissioned musical being written by Bradley Snelling.
During 2015, CYGNETS ran 2 further ENCORE! concerts, and 2 ‘Matilda The Musical’ short courses, all of which were very well received. Then in 2016 there were 2 further short courses – ‘Oliver!’ in February and ‘Annie’ in August – with record numbers attending and excellent reviews; plus 2 further concerts – ENCORE! and “PAINT MACC PINK” which raised £650 for the charity ‘Prevent Breast Cancer’. CYGNETS were also delighted to perform at the Christmas Light Switch-On event in Macclesfield.
2017 has proved a very busy and very productive year for CYGNETS:
- The National Theatre Connections production of #YOLO involved 14 young teenagers in a 6 month long project which finished with a very emotional and professional performance at The Lowry Quays Theatre in April 2017
- CYGNETS held two further short courses, ‘Grease & the Lion King’ during the Easter Holidays and ‘Charlie & the Chocolate Factory’ in August. Each course involved approximately 30 young performers from 7 to 14 years with an experienced Producer, Director, Musical Director & Choreographer and various backstage helpers to put on the most amazing shows to packed audiences.
- ‘Sing Le Mis in a Day’ proved a very successful event with many performers of all ages coming together to perform a professional-standard showcase of the most amazing songs from the famous musical.
Finally, following the success of #YOLO, CYGNETS decided to continue its weekly sessions with the establishment of a Musical Youth Theatre Group meeting every Saturday afternoon. Initially split into primary and secondary age groups, in July 2017 the two groups joined together to present amazing showcases of ‘Aladdin’ and ‘We Will Rock You’. This proved a very successful venture and will continue into the Autumn of 2017 with preparations for a staged performance of ‘Hairspray: The Musical’ in SUMMER 2018 at the Daneside Theatre in Congleton.
CYGNETS is continuing to grow in popularity, partly because it is filling a gap in what is available for young people, but primarily because of the standard of events that it puts on.
CYGNETS is being run on a non-profit basis and is in the process of applying for CIO (Charitable Incorporated Organisation) status. All monies either raised or donated to the group will only be used by the group to achieve its aims and objectives.
